When I speak of Denver, Colorado in February, what do you think of? Probably lots of snow, cold weather and great powder skiing. Well for those of you who don’t travel to this wonderful city much, you would be sorely mistaken. I mean yes, there is lots of snow, cold weather and great powder skiing, but you would have to travel about sixty miles west to find that.

In the six years that my family and I have lived in this amazing city, I have been able to play golf every month of the year since our arrival. My game has been a journey so far, with lots of ups and downs, but it’s a far cry from an unfortunate incident at the Chaska Par 30 where my clubs were dumped, by me, into the bottom of the 9th fairway lake. Anyone of my friends who were with me that fateful day can vouch for me on that.

After a different set of clubs and a renewed passion for the game I’ve taken to it like a duck to water. I’ve learned to set goals for myself, starting small, like getting off the first tee without error, and eventually leading up to an overall scoring total for the day. Which I try to relate to fatherhood in a way. For example a small goal may be, getting out of bed at 6:30am to wipe my son’s behind after his morning poo. Then building to a larger goal of getting him to day care on time, you know that sort of thing.

The best part about golf though is that my son share’s my love for the links. Lucas started swinging the club to emulate me at the ripe old age of eighteen months, that’s right eighteen months. To say I was a proud papa that day would be an understatement. He is now three and this summer looks to be his first action on a real course. So he doesn’t spend countless hours in the backyard and at the range, like his father. But I feel his confidence is at an all-time high. The kids ready. Sign him up. I wonder if he’ll have first tee jitters like his old man? Either way he is likely to enjoy himself no matter the outcome.

So next time you think, oh Denver in February, brrr! Think again my friends, golf season is here. At least this week it is.
